We offer a comprehensive, educational introduction to the world of publishing! CMA’s Industry Academy is a biweekly, hands-on participatory workshop taught by the CMA team. Industry Academy is a twelve-week seminar with specific examples, stories, handouts, and practical information about the day-to-day world of publishing and agenting.
Industry Academy takes place in the spring, summer, and fall semesters. We are currently closed to applications. We typically open to applications for a two-week window in March for the summer semester, July for the fall semester, and November for the spring semester.

This is an educational opportunity and we encourage applicants to contact their affiliated colleges or universities to obtain course credit for the program if and when possible.
Duration of Industry Academy: Semester (fall, spring, summer) Our application portal typically opens in November for the spring semester, March for the summer semester, and July for the fall semester.
Requirements: Ideal participants will be interested in both the business and editorial side of publishing, be proficient with Microsoft Office Suite (especially Outlook), be proficient at researching and writing, and have a keen editorial eye. We anticipate a minimum time commitment of 16-20 hours each week for participants.
CMA looks for candidates who love to read and evaluate commercial and upscale fiction and nonfiction, from picture books to adult. The candidate should be knowledgeable about what’s selling successfully in the market, have strong computer skills (Word, Excel, Canva, Google Drive, etc.), and be a self-starter.

- A one-page cover letter (include publishing or office experience, availability and location during the semester, technical/computer-related skills, genre interest)
- Your resume
- A list of the last 3 books you’ve read (outside of school), as well as your favorite 3 books (published after 2000)
- Reading preferences, including lists of your favorite genres and authors
- The average number of books you read each month
